They produced high quality instruments with a unique blend of features that ended up in what I like to think of as a perfect blend of Selmer and Conn- a very French tone, but big like a Conn. This tenor is no exception, it is a very fun instrument to play, and has a Selmer-like color of tone and character. SML horns are the often the unsung favorites of many saxophonists “in the know,” because they are often dynamic players priced well below what they should be worth. Because it came to us with a quality regulation, we are not doing our full pro setup, but we did put a light down it just to make sure everything is good, and it is sealing up like a drum. It has a good pro set up on it, with a lighter spring tension and medium key heights. This tenor was just recently fully overhauled, using firm leather pads and Maestro “star” style metal resonators. There are just a couple resolders on a couple of the lower body keyguards, all done professionally. The original neck doesn't look to have ever been pulled down or damaged, in fact, the whole horn shows no past evidence of major repair. The work was done well, as the engraving remains crisp around the bell, and the original rolled tone holes show no signs of intensive buffing. This tenor was stripped at some point in its past, and currently has no lacquer on its body, with nickel plated keys. It is one of the bargains in the shop right now. This tenor is a tremendous value at its price, as it is a sweet player and comes with a recent overhaul.
